high protein pastaI just got wind of this new product: Zone Diets High Protein Pasta (pictured right)

The pasta is actually made in Italy and shipped out to the us by the Zone Diet folks. Here’s what zone has to say about it:

Our Italian company “Ener Zona” has developed delicious, all-natural pastas that are Zone balanced with the addition of a teaspoon of olive oil and a teaspoon of parmesan cheese. These products have been so successful in Italy that we decided to import a limited quantity.

These authentic Italian, all-natural Zone Pastas are effortless to prepare and easily incorporated into everyday Zone meals. Zone Pasta is designed to provide a balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates to help you stay In the Zone™. Zone Pasta is formulated with excellent protein ingredients from natural sources of peas and soy which both contain essential amino acids. A single 60 gram serving of Zone Pasta has 22 grams of protein, 27 grams of carbohydrates, and 0 grams of fat. This serving easily becomes Zone Balanced into a 3 Block Zone Meal with the addition of one teaspoon of olive oil and one teaspoon of parmesan cheese.

This stuff really is high in protein! It’s actually 36% protein, which is very high for pasta. It’s also lower in carbohydrates, which is ideal if you’re looking to decrease your calories while keeping your protein high. Check out the nutritional information below:

As far as I know this is the only high protein pasta around. The big question is, what does it taste like? Usually as soon as products are made “healthier” the taste goes out the window! Has anyone tried it?

High protein pasta retails for $7.95 and you can get it here.

I found it a little gummy but not awful. Given a plate of good real durum semolina pasta and a plate of this - no question which I’d chose. But given the choice of this or no pasta? I haven’t decided yet.

Here’s a another brand I like a bit better (and its cheaper) http://www.pappardellesonline.com/servlet/Detail?no=37.

I tried the dried but I think it also comes in freshor frozen which might be a tastier choice.
