I was browsing through my favorite online supplement store last night and I came across a (what I think is new?) protein powder from Optimum Nutrition called Pro Complex. Pro Complex is actually a blend of 8 different types of protein, is super high in amino acids, and have more glutamine than most other protein powders I’ve seen. Is this the ultimate protein source?

Analyzing Pro Complex…

8 different protein sources. These protein sources are: Whey Protein Isolate, Glutamine Peptides, L-Leucine, Egg Albumin, Whey Peptides, L-Isoleucine and L-Valine. You’re probably thinking, “what are the advantages of so many protein cources”? The advantage is really in the amino acid profile and increased glutamine content.

The write up on the website went on to talk about absorption times blah blah blah. That doesn’t really matter, especially when you’re talking post workout because whey protein isolate (WPI) will be absorbed faster than any other protein source. Pro Complex contains mostly whey protein isolate.

Low in fat, low in carbs, low in sugars. This is typical of any good protein powder, so I’d expect it from Pro Complex.

I think the increased glutamine and amino acid content of Pro Complex is where it excels. I think it could make a real difference in slowing/preventing muscle breakdown post workout and speeding up muscle recovery times. Not to mention the immune systems benefit. And if you’re supplementing with extra aminos and/or glutamine you won’t need to if you have a couple of shakes of this a day.

One thing I did not understand is the serving size. Yes, you get 60g of protein and tons of glutamine and aminos, but why the double size serving? I’m not sure about that. I’d say you only need a serving that size post workout.

The verdict?

I am going to try this once my current supply runs out. I think the increased animo acid and glutamine content will make a big enough difference to warrant the extra cost.

Has anyone else tried this? If so I’d like to know. Post your comments at the bottom of the page. Thanks!

Pro complex is an awesome protein blend…it’s well worth the extra five bucks. I have tried Strawberry flavor and it literaly tastes like a milkshake. I’m using it post workout, for meal replacements (mixed with fruit and oats) and before bed (mixed with Udo’s oil)

I had earlier used the whey standard and did not get expected results from it. My trainer suggested me the procomplex as an alternative at first and I got a huge muscle gain after using it and i am suggesting to my friends too.
